Practicum in Health Science - Pharmacy Technician

Course Description:

The Pharmacy Technician Program is a college level course with the objective to equip students with knowledge, technical skills and employability skills required for an entry-level position in the pharmacy field or related area. Our teaching techniques encourage active student participation and may include group discussions and projects, laboratory work, simulations, demonstrations, field trips, guest speakers, and lectures. Students in this course are given the opportunity to participate in an unpaid externship program with local retail pharmacies in which they will work under the guidance of a Pharmacist. A strong emphasis is placed on ethics, accountability, professionalism, and the individual`s commitment to pursue lifelong personal and professional development. In addition, students who successfully complete the course, will have the opportunity to sit for the Pharmacy Technician Certification Exam (PTCE) prior to graduation. This is a nationally recognized certification exam with the earned credential, CPhT, received upon successful testing. Lewisville ISD TECC-East is recognized as a PTCB-Recognized Training Program. It is now required to complete a training program with this designation to become a credentialed pharmacy technician. Therefore, this exam is required for program participation & course credit. There are fees associated with this program. For your CPhT and state registration the cost is roughly $200. Fees are subject to change at any time. Many of these fees are required up front. Expenses associated with this program are required for licensing and Texas State Board of Pharmacy Registration. These fees are typically paid directly to the third-party providing that service. Payment arrangements may be available for fees paid directly through the program. Students will be trained for sterile preparations which involves the creation of IV medications and base-level pharmacy compounding. They will be provided the option to pay for and certify, a second course certification, as Certified Compounded Sterile Preparation Technicians, CSPhT. This certification is optional. Should students elect for the second certification, the additional cost is $250. This certification opens the doors for students to work in a hospital, compounding, or clinical pharmacy setting. It is required to be eligible for these jobs. iPad (technology-used daily), minimal (1) pair of dark grey/pewter scrubs, & (1) white lab coat Students must register for & be licensed Pharmacy Technician Trainees with the State of Texas. (State Background Check, Physical Drug Testing, & Social Security Number required). Required to provide proof of this registration the first week of class. Students participating in this program will need personal transportation to & from internship locations. LISD will not-provide transportation to internship(s). Certifications Earned: Pharmacy Technician Certification, CPhT & Certified Compounded Sterile Preparation Technician, CSPhT
